Ohio may be losing marginal oil, gas wells — depending on state’s definition

After questions from The Canton Repository, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is submitting corrected information to the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission regarding production of Ohio’s oil and gas wells.

Drive through Stark County and you’ll see some of the 3,100 oil and natural gas wells that dot residential neighborhoods and farm fields alike.

Nearly all of the wells are small conventional wells, and some have been sucking hydrocarbons from the earth for decades. Stark has just a handful of the large horizontal shale wells that companies started to drill in 2010.
