White House, Kerry: UN Report Makes Case for Climate Action

Top White House and Cabinet officials are seeking to use the new United Nations climate change report to create political momentum for stepped-up U.S. and international steps to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The U.N. science panel’s report Friday finds with at least 95 percent certainty that humans have been the dominant driver of warming since the mid-20th century, and that sharp temperature rises are projected this century absent strong emissions cuts.

“This is yet another wakeup call: Those who deny the science or choose excuses over action are playing with fire,” said Secretary of State John Kerry in a statement. “Once again, the science grows clearer, the case grows more compelling, and the costs of inaction grow beyond anything that anyone with conscience or common sense should be willing to even contemplate.”
